Bakeries are a neighbourhood staple in Athens, where packaged and processed slices and buns are frowned upon.

By Carolina Doriti

For centuries, bread has had its special place on the Greek table. In fact, it is so deeply connected to traditional dishes like our beloved ladera (vegetables or pulses slow-cooked in olive oil), that having one without the other is like having meat without potatoes, or fish without chips.

This city is a great place to satisfy all your carb cravings. Every neighbourhood in Athens has at least one bakery where most households shop daily. You’ll find anything from the perfect loaf of sourdough to sesame-coated koulouri, and breads stuffed with just about anything. Apart from bread, these bakeries offer an array of sweet and savoury pies, cookies and cakes, freshly-made sandwiches and syrupy pastries. These five bakeries are standouts in central Athens.

We bet you can't eat just one of these buns.
