Standing at 277 metres, Lycabettus Hill is the second highest viewpoint in the Athens area (after Tourkovounia). The origin of its name is contested - the etymology appears connected to wolves (lykos in Greek) that may have lived in the area. Another story connects Lycabettus to the rising of the sun above the hill, spreading light over the city. In the past, its slopes were used as a quarry - several of Athens’ neoclassical gems are built from its stone - and an air-raid shelter was built inside the hill before WWII. More recently, music concerts took place at the open-air amphitheater on the hilltop - though not currently operational, the City of Athens has announced plans for the revival of the theater in the coming year. Other plans for the area’s sustainable development are currently underway, especially focusing on the mountain’s flora and fauna.
