CineFIX: An Open-Air Cinema on EMST’s Rooftop Terrace
Each summer, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) transforms its rooftop terrace into CineFIX, one of the most spectacular outdoor cinemas in Athens. The name affectionately recalls the history of the landmark building, which once housed the famous Fix brewery. Boasting panoramic views of the Athenian skyline and the illuminated Acropolis, the open air space offers an ideal setting for a summer long series of moving image screenings running from May through September 2026.
On Friday, 5 June, EMST kicks off its June programming with a special evening celebrating Athens Pride 2026. The event begins at 8.30pm with an insightful panel discussion titled "One century plus: The history of the LGBTQI+ community from Magnus Hirschfeld to the present." The panel features social anthropology professor Konstantinos Giannakopoulos, queer psychoanalyst Chloe Kolyri, and political scientist Grigoris Vallianatos, with Fivos Sakalis moderating.
Following the panel at 9.15pm, the screen lights up for a compelling double feature. The screenings begin with Eva Stefani’s brief work Morning Glory (2022), followed by Rosa von Praunheim’s feature length film The Einstein of Sex: Life and Work of Dr. M. Hirschfeld (1999), which examines the courageous life and legacy of the pioneering German sexologist.
Please note that while the films are accessible to international audiences, the introductory panel discussion at 8.30pm will be conducted in Greek.
