The official and oldest cemetery of Athens. The resting place of eminent politicians, actors, architects, artists and other historical figures.

When was it built

In 1837, shortly after the founding of the modern Greek state. Craftsmen of the island of Tinos built this esteemed burial ground using fine marble from Athens’ Mount Pendeli.

What's the story

Ernst Ziller, Adamantios Korais, Giorgos Seferis and Heinrich Schliemann are just some of the famous Greeks and philhellenes buried here. Their tombs and mausoleums are adorned with stunning statues that turn the cemetery into an open-air museum.

Why it's important

The cemetery is a wonderful combination of park and museum thanks to the towering pines and cypresses and the majestic Romantic and Neoclassical sculptures scattered throughout. This listed archaeological space feels like a free, outdoor sculpture gallery.

Must-see

There are popular spots like the Sleeping Maiden, The Mother of the Occupation or the statue of the hero of the Ottoman War, Theodoros Kolokotronis. But your own favourite could be down the narrowest alley. Perhaps a family grave or a towering monument of a great author. Take in the tranquility and discover the cemetery’s beauty.

Fun fact

Urban legend has it that a ghost haunts the cemetery. It’s said to be that of a stingy undertaker who argued with co-workers about carrying funeral wreaths, and now roams the grounds with a wreath around his neck.
