When was it built

This purpose-built, seven-storey arts centre opened in 2010.

What's the story

This modern cultural landmark covers an entire block of Syngrou Avenue. Architecture Studio’s bold design is a glass cube cloaked in rows of white marble that glow at night. Known locally as Stegi (literally Roof but also Haven and Shelter), the building hosts theatre, dance, and musical performances by Greek and leading international artists, as well as boundary-pushing exhibitions that often extend off-site.

Why it's important

One of Greece’s most prolific and ground-breaking cultural venues, the Onassis Stegi is a platform for emerging local talent, as well as cultivating international collaborations that challenge the boundaries between art and science, gender and technology.

Must-see

Spanning the 6th and 7th floors of Stegi, with open views of the Acropolis, Amphibian is the latest addition to the space aiming to sit between worlds. Somewhere between Japandi calm and art-house energy, contemporary, ingredient-driven cooking anchors the experience, while the mood gently changes from evening to night.

Fun fact

Onassis Ready, the foundation’s new creative hub in Agios Ioannis Rentis, transforms a former factory into a space where art, music, and performance come alive. Its name is a playful nod to the neighbourhood and a spirit of creative prospects.
