When was it built

In the early 1830s. It’s one of the city’s first neoclassical buildings and was designed by the Danish architect Christian Hansen.

What's the story

The building was originally the silk factory that gave the district of Metaxourgio (metaxi is Greek for ‘silk’) its name.

Why it's important

The collection offers a cross-section of modern Greek art—paintings and sculptures—from the interwar period.

The series of portraits of Athens mayors by prominent Greek artists and sketches of Athenian landmarks.

Fun fact

Like Dimitris Philopotis’s sculpture ‘The Fisherman’—the gallery’s first acquisition—most works represented a break with mainstream artistic tradition when they were initially added to the collection.
