More than 7,000 exhibits tracing 2,300 years of Jewish history in Greece.

When was it built

A ground-up renovation completed in 1998 retained only the façade of the 19th century residence to create a four-storey museum around an octagonal shaft.

What's the story

The museum’s first home was in a small room next to the Athens synagogue. Great visitor interest and support from various donors and the government enabled its collection to grow and in 1997 the doors of its current location were opened.

Why it's important

Using rare religious and historical artefacts, the museum traces Jewish history in Greece across more than two millennia.

Must-see

The exhibits immortalising the Greek Jews who fought in the anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II.

Fun fact

The museum has a rich photographic archive that covers all aspects of Jewish life and tradition in Greece. It’s open to researchers and the public by appointment only.
