The Artist's Cinema: Film Selections by Jannis Psychopedis
As part of its summer programme, the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation invites film lovers to the rooftop of its Athens museum for The Artist’s Cinema, a series of open-air screenings curated by acclaimed Greek artist Jannis Psychopedis.
Presented alongside the exhibition Jannis Psychopedis: Landscapes of Memory. What I Kept, on view until 4 October, the programme reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with memory, imagery and the ways in which cities shape our collective imagination. Psychopedis has selected six films that have influenced his artistic vision, creating a dialogue between cinema and the themes explored in his work.
The line-up spans some of the most influential movements and directors in film history, from Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking Breathless and Michelangelo Antonioni’s enigmatic Blow-Up to Billy Wilder’s classic comedy Some Like It Hot and Federico Fellini’s iconic La Dolce Vita. Together, the screenings offer a journey through post-war European cinema and Hollywood at its most inventive.
The setting is reason enough to attend. Located atop the museum’s neoclassical building in Pangrati, the rooftop boasts sweeping views of some of Athens’ most recognisable landmarks, including the Parthenon, Lycabettus Hill and the Saronic Gulf. It’s an ideal spot to experience the city’s enduring love affair with open-air cinema, one of the defining pleasures of an Athenian summer.
You can book tickets exclusively on the Cinebur app with selected ticket options also including cocktails and a guided tour of the exhibition before the screening.
