La Traviata
Few operas have captured the drama of love and loss as powerfully as Verdi's La Traviata, and this summer the Greek National Opera revives one of its most beloved productions at the Stavros Niarchos Hall.
Based on Alexandre Dumas fils' La Dame aux Camélias, the opera follows the tragic romance between the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry and the young Alfredo Germont. What begins as a passionate love affair soon collides with the expectations and hypocrisies of 19th-century society, leading to one of the most moving finales in the operatic repertoire. More than 170 years after its premiere, La Traviata remains one of the world's most frequently performed operas, thanks to its emotional depth and unforgettable score.
This revival also pays tribute to the late designer Nikos S. Petropoulos, whose lavish production returns to the Greek National Opera 25 years after its first staging. Featuring elegant period sets and costumes inspired by 19th-century France, the production embraces the grandeur and romance of Verdi's masterpiece while placing Violetta's emotional journey firmly at its centre.
Presented at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, one of Athens' leading cultural destinations, La Traviata offers an ideal introduction for opera newcomers and a welcome return for seasoned devotees alike.
