Maria La Callas: The Art of Italian Costume Design in the Film

The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Athens, presents a stunning visual tribute to the enduring legacy of Maria Callas. This unique exhibition showcases the visionary costumes created by the internationally renowned, award winning Italian costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini for the film Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín. Curated by Parrini himself alongside fashion art direction students from the prestigious Polimoda school, the display highlights costume design as a central pillar of cinematic and theatrical storytelling.

The exhibition explores the complex, multifaceted personality of "La Divina" by focusing on pivotal snapshots of her life and artistic career. Visitors will see legendary opera costumes coexisting with glamorous pieces that defined her high society social life. Beyond honoring Callas as a style icon of timeless elegance, the collection of "Made in Italy" garments reflects the sociological and cultural evolution of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, tracing the global rise of the Italian fashion industry. The event also marks the official celebration of the "Italian Fashion Days in the World" in Greece.
