Giselle
The Ballet of the Greek National Opera presents a new production of Giselle, one of the defining works of the Romantic repertoire, on stage at the Stavros Niarchos Hall from 19 December to 3 January. With music by Adolphe Adam and additional orchestrations by Friedrich Burgmüller and Boris Asafyev, the ballet returns in a fresh revival by Verónica Villar and Elena Iglesias, based on the celebrated choreography of Marius Petipa.
Giselle remains a landmark for dancers and audiences alike. Its title role, often described as “the Hamlet of ballet”, demands both emotional depth and technical clarity, bringing to life the story of a young village girl who falls in love with a man hiding his true identity. When his deception is revealed, heartbreak leads her to madness and death. What follows is one of ballet’s most haunting second acts: a moonlit realm of spirits where love and forgiveness transcend betrayal. The GNO Orchestra, led by José Salazar, shapes Adam’s score with its characteristic lyricism and dramatic tension.
