By Heart by Tiago Rodrigues at Stegi
Tiago Rodrigues returns to the Onassis Stegi Main Stage with By Heart, a quietly powerful performance that reflects on memory, poetry, and freedom in an age dominated by screens, passwords, and digital storage. Performed in English with Greek surtitles, the work unfolds as a personal monologue that gradually becomes a shared experience, as ten volunteers from the audience are invited on stage to learn a Shakespeare sonnet by heart.
With only a bare stage, a few chairs, and crates of books, Rodrigues weaves together stories of writers, resistance, and remembrance, drawing on figures such as George Steiner, Boris Pasternak, and Ray Bradbury, alongside the intimate story of his grandmother as she began to lose her sight. The act of memorisation becomes both poetic gesture and political statement, suggesting that words carried within us remain the most resilient form of knowledge and freedom.
