A tiny Christian church packed with history on a site that may have once worshipped Hercules.

When was it built

In the 16th century. This is one of just 24 early Christian churches dating from Ottoman rule. Ironically, it was nearly demolished during the construction of the Education and Religious Affairs Ministry but has survived to enhance the entrance of a new 5-star hotel.

What's the story

Archaeological finds suggest an altar dedicated to Hercules was once situated here. After Greece won its independence, the grounds of the tiny church were briefly used as a station for a cavalry regiment In 2016, the Greek church leased the property to the Electra luxury hotel franchise.

Why it's important

Tucked between the pillars supporting a modern building, the chapel is an odd sight. Inside, the walls of this single-chamber vaulted church are densely decorated with traces of murals. Most of the saints depicted are female, as this church is said to be a protector of pregnant women.

Must-see

The relics of Agios Nikolas Planas, a late-19th-century priest, who was made a saint for his work to protect thousands of orphaned children.

Fun fact

The church sits above a web of underground tunnels once used to smuggle weapons from a nearby arms maker during the Greek War of Independence.
