A Byzantine gem that once wore the city crown.

When was it built

Construction began in 1846 on the ruins of an older church, which was razed during the Greek war of independence and partially restored in 1835.

What's the story

This large church served briefly as the metropolis, or cathedral, of Athens after the city was declared the capital of the newly-founded Greek state.

Why it's important

Even though it wasn’t ultimately considered grand enough to serve as the city’s cathedral, Agia Irini is a gem of Byzantine architecture. It features a columned, three-aisle narthex with a balcony and double naves before a gated altar.

Must-see

Two large murals in the naves, depicting Paul preaching at the Areopagus and Jesus preaching in Jerusalem.

Fun fact

At the official ceremony celebrating his coming-of-age in 1835, King Othon - the Bavarian prince Otto, who became the first king of modern Greece - had neither crown nor sceptre. Their delivery by sea was delayed.
