Why Look at Animals? A Case for the Rights of Non-Human Lives
EMST’s summer exhibition takes a striking look at how we see—and often overlook—the animals we share the planet with. Inspired by John Berger’s famous essay, Why Look at Animals?, the show brings together more than 60 artists from around the world, exploring everything from animal rights and habitat loss to empathy, co-existence and imagination. Spanning all seven floors of the museum, the exhibition moves from unsettling depictions of exploitation to quieter, more hopeful visions of interspecies connection. It’s a rare opportunity to reflect on our place in the natural world—and what it might mean to share it more fairly. Pets are also welcome, which feels right for an exhibition that puts animals at the centre of the conversation.
