What the Statues See: The Invisible Life of the Acropolis Museum and Its Inhabitants
What if the statues could see us? That simple question sparked a year-and-a-half-long exploration inside the Acropolis Museum—now captured in the lens of psychoanalyst and photographer Maria Loutzakli.
Her new exhibition at the “Melina” Cultural Centre doesn’t document the statues themselves, but what surrounds them: the shifting light, the city outside the glass, the silhouettes of visitors, the rooftop forests of Makrygianni, and the mountain skyline beyond. Loutzakli’s photos trace a visual path from gallery to cityscape, blurring the line between what’s seen and what’s imagined.
Curated by Christoforos Marinos, What the Statues See invites visitors into this quiet dialogue between object and observer, ancient and modern, Athens and its reflections. It’s also a perfect excuse to start or end a walk along Dionysiou Areopagitou and Apostolou Pavlou—connecting Petralona with the Acropolis and Koukaki, through one of the city’s most scenic pedestrian routes.
