Stathis Logothetis: Earth to Earth
There is something unapologetically physical about this exhibition at The National Museum of Contemporary Art, starting with the title. Earth to Earth is a major retrospective of Stathis Logothetis, an artist whose paintings refuse to stay politely on the wall. His work pushes past the usual boundaries of canvas and pigment, pulling in the language of the body, skin, blood, decay, and the elements, as if painting is not an image but an event that keeps changing.
Logothetis developed his practice in dialogue with the European avant garde, yet after returning to Greece in the early nineteen seventies he found a very different cultural landscape, with fewer points of contact for that kind of experimentation. This retrospective brings together around seventy works from across his career, alongside unpublished material from his personal archive, offering a fuller picture of how his ideas evolved. It also opens a timely way to read his work today, through ecology and body politics, and through the creative bond he shared with his brother, composer Anestis Logothetis.
