Desperate times call for desperate measures - or so the saying goes. In this time-honoured American farce by John Murray and Allen Boretz, a bankrupt troupe of hungry actors and aspiring starlets hole up in a seedy hotel to plot their ascent from poverty by chasing funds for a new venture. This frantic comedy debuted in 1937, on the heels of the Wall Street Crash, and has since found fresh fans via Broadway, the Marx Brothers, a Frank Sinatra musical – and now, a blistering post-modern performance that flirts with brutality, savagery and the darkness of the grotesque.
