Michalis Kiousis: The Spaces in Between
In his new solo exhibition, Michalis Kiousis brings the human figure to the foreground, using it as a point of orientation within a world shaped by memory, movement, and layered cultural references. His paintings draw together urban imagery, ritual forms, architectural fragments, and traces of nature, creating scenes that feel both grounded and slightly uncanny, as though assembled from places half remembered and constantly shifting.
Rather than treating place as something fixed, Kiousis approaches it as something built through wandering, observation, and accumulation. East and West, the everyday and the ceremonial, harmony and tension all meet within works that remain open and fluid. Rich in texture and colour, the paintings are made with oil pastels the artist produces himself, giving the surfaces a vivid, tactile quality that carries the immediacy of drawing onto a large scale.
