John Stoddart: Come Close
Larger than life, yet still with a hint of vulnerability. That’s the story John Stoddart’s megastar portraits tell. The “photographer to the stars” and analogue photography devotee opens his first exhibition in Greece - and current home since 2019 - , “Come Close”, named after Sappho’s collection of poems, at i-D Projectart. His work evokes old Hollywood glamour, mostly in black and white for that special allure. Stoddart’s lens captured the bold and beautiful of the film and music industries, when his protagonists were still on their path towards fame: Katherine Zeta-Jones, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and The Rolling Stones, are only a few of the names in his long list of portraits. More than a celebrity photographer, Stoddart embodies the qualities he puts forward in his art. Dressed to the nines, his dandy posture personifies old Hollywood, that of a bon viveur from older times, straight out of celluloid.
