Greek National Opera: Rigoletto at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus
The Greek National Opera concludes its 2024/25 season with Rigoletto at the iconic Odeon of Herodes Atticus, before the venue temporarily closes for renovations. This is a unique opportunity to experience Verdi’s dark masterpiece in one of Athens' most celebrated settings, conducted by Derrick Inoue.
First directed by Katerina Evangelatou, who has helmed the Athens Epidaurus Festival in recent years, the production, originally presented at the 2022 Festival, is now being revived by Ion Kesoulis. The title role of Rigoletto will be shared by two distinguished Greek baritones: Dimitris Platanias and Tasis Christogiannopoulos, the artistic director of the Olympia Music Theatre of the City of Athens.
Rigoletto is one of the most iconic works in the operatic repertoire, telling the tragic tale of a hunchbacked jester’s desperate attempt to shield his daughter from a deceitful duke’s seduction. Themes of love, betrayal, and revenge unfold against the backdrop of 1980s Italian provincial society, a setting chosen by Evangelatou to illuminate the dark, contradictory nature of Rigoletto’s character.
Don’t miss the chance to experience this unforgettable opera in a world-class venue.
