AEF2026: Einstein on the Beach

This summer, Athens Epidaurus Festival's main city venue, the former industrial complex in Pireos 260, celebrates 20 years as one of the city’s most vital cultural meeting points. Under the artistic direction of Michail Marmarinos, this year’s landmark programme unfolds across two months of theatre, dance, music, performance, and multidisciplinary works, bringing together more than 50 events by acclaimed international artists alongside some of the most exciting voices from Greece’s contemporary scene. Pireos 260 will live through the Athenian summer as a dynamic space where emerging creators, established names, and curious audiences come together to explore what contemporary performance can be today. New collaborations, technology-driven works, and immersive experiences sit alongside bold theatrical productions, live music, and cutting-edge choreography.

Amongst these monumental musical and multidisciplinary works is a rare opportunity to experience Philip Glass and Robert Wilson’s groundbreaking masterpiece, Einstein on the Beach, presented in a definitive concert version. Nearly half a century after its premiere, the work that radically redefined 20th-century opera remains a fluid, open-ended marvel. Rather than a standard linear biography, it unfolds as an abstract, non-narrative exploration of Albert Einstein’s universe, transforming his theories of time and space into a hypnotic stage reality.

This historic performance celebrates the legendary convergence of Glass's iconic, New York-bred minimalism and Wilson's structured theatrical vision. This landmark 21st-century staging is brought to life with total mathematical precision by the Ictus Ensemble and the exquisite choral power of Collegium Vocale Gent, featuring narration by the celebrated songwriter Suzanne Vega. Running continuously for three and a half hours without an intermission, the production invites a slow-burning, meditative experience where audience members are permitted to enter and exit the hall freely throughout the performance.
