AEF2025: Subset Festival ⊆

The Athens Epidaurus Festival celebrates its 70th edition in 2025, with 95 days of artistic brilliance featuring over 3,000 artists from 14 countries. From iconic venues in Athens like the Herodeion, Pireos 260, and the revived City of Athens Lycabettus Theatre, to the grand finale in Epidaurus, the festival brings the world’s top performances to Greece’s stages.

This year’s programme includes world premieres, new commissions, and exciting artistic strands such as Contemporary Ancients, which reimagines Greek tragedy, and Fierce Women in Performance, exploring gender and power. The GRAPE – Greek Agora of Performance platform highlights emerging Greek talent, while the Subset Festival brings experimental sounds to the stage. Cycles Roots revisits folk traditions with a fresh twist.

A festival for those eager to explore new sounds, Subset Festival ⊆ returns this June to shake up what we think music can be. Hosted inside the striking Athens Conservatory, this five-day sonic playground invites artists from around the globe — and across genres — to explore the thrilling space where sound, image and technology collide.

From Japan’s audiovisual master Ryoji Ikeda, to Berlin’s genre-defying duo Mouse on Mars, and avant-pop shapeshifter Lyra Pramuk, this year’s lineup is bold, boundary-pushing, and definitely unclassifiable. Catch ethereal field recordings from Christina Vantzou, the dub-ambient dreamscapes of Carmen Villain, and Heinali & Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko’s eerie reimagining of Hildegard von Bingen—performed on modular synths and medieval vocals.

And it’s not just the big names. Subset ⊆ champions the local experimental scene too, with new works by Greek trailblazers like Dimitris Kamarotos, BLIP, and Savvas Metaxas, plus daring collaborations between poets, coders, and composers. Immersive installations, algorithmic soundscapes, lo-fi rituals, and late-night performances stretch into other dimensions.

Curated by Stavros Gasparatos, Subset is less a series of concerts and more a charged space for sonic exchange, a rare Athens moment where the future of sound unfolds live.
