TiACF26: Midnight Express – '80s Night
This May, TiACF2026 returns to prove that the best bits of the city aren't always on the mainstream maps. We’re moving beyond the landmarks and diving headfirst into the heartbeat of our neighbourhoods. From 1 May to 31 May, the city transforms into a living, breathing stage where you can anticipate lived experiences that often blur the lines between art and daily life. We’re taking over the spots you walk past every day: the quiet neighbourhood squares, the courtyards in "off-grid" districts, and the sun-drenched rooftops and backstreets only locals know how to find. With over 300 free events, this isn't just a festival happening in Athens; it’s a festival made by the city, for the city. It’s your festival. Check out our curated selection or go to the official TiACF26 website to see what's on throughout May.
You can witness the cult cinematic phenomenon known as Midnight Express as it leaves the dark basement halls to soak up the Athenian starlight. Conceived by film critic Akis Kapranos, this series is a deep-seated love letter to the legendary late-night screenings of the past (specifically the magic of spots like Alphaville and Cine Dexamenis). It is a chance for you to join a community of dedicated cinephiles in reclaiming the big-screen experience in the open air, bridging the gap between nostalgic veterans and a new generation of film lovers.
For this edition, the series takes over the historic grounds of Plato’s Academy Park for a trio of '80s masterpieces. You’ll find yourself in a setting where ancient history meets pop-culture nostalgia, sharing the collective passion for pure cinematic joy. Whether you are there for the sweeping romance of Sydney Pollack or the campy action of John Carpenter, these screenings turn a simple night in the park into a communal journey through the golden era of the silver screen.
