Anna Bolena by Gaetano Donizetti
Donizetti’s powerful opera Anna Bolena returns to the Stavros Niarchos Hall in a new production by the Greek National Opera, marking fifty years since its historic staging at the GNO. Set against the turbulent years of the English Reformation, the opera traces the final days of Anne Boleyn, caught between personal desire, political ambition, and a court that has already sealed her fate.
Directed by Themelis Glynatsis, this new interpretation places history itself at the centre of the stage. Newly designed sets by Leslie Travers engage in a deliberate dialogue with the legendary costumes created by Nicholas Georgiadis for the 1976 GNO production, revived here as living theatrical material. The result is a visually and dramaturgically layered performance that reflects on power, memory, and the ways the past continues to shape the present.
