Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi at the Greek National Opera
Giuseppe Verdi’s final opera returns to the Greek National Opera in a revival of the acclaimed production of Falstaff, staged at the Stavros Niarchos Hall. Based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, this sharp-witted comedy centres on the ageing knight Sir John Falstaff, whose misguided romantic schemes unravel in a series of cleverly constructed, fast-moving scenes.
Directed by Stephen Langridge, Artistic Director of the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, the production relocates the action to 1930s England, a society defined by rigid hierarchies and social absurdities. Verdi’s score combines lightness, precision, and emotional depth, offering a masterclass in comic opera that distils character and situation into brilliantly economical musical phrases. With its famous final ensemble declaring that all the world is a jest, Falstaff stands as a playful and deeply human farewell from one of opera’s greatest composers.
Selected performances on 1 and 5 March 2026 will be fully accessible, with services including Greek Sign Language interpretation, captions, audio description, and designated seating for audience members with access needs.
