Constitutes an important first step towards children’s familiarity with the concept “museum” offering children an environment adapted to their needs and abilities. Through interactive exhibits and activities children up to 12 years old, explore, understand and enjoy the world in which they live.

When was it built

Established in 1994 as a result of the collaboration of the non-profit organization Hellenic Children’s Museum ( www.hcm.gr ) and the Culture, Sports & Youth Organization of the City of Athens (OPANDA). Today, the museum is housed on the ground floor of the Athens Conservatory.

What's the story

Activities range from the exhibit “Hello, Pythagoras” where children become familiar with geometry to the exhibit “Pet Care Clinic” where children through role play discover how important is the veterinarian for the health of pets and the activities to the rest of the exhibits. Activities are in Greek, but staff speak English.

Why it's important

A welcoming, accessible space where children can observe, think, explore, play, experiment, create. The exhibits are designed to encourage curiosity and to invite visitors to use all their senses to interact with the exhibits. The museum is aimed at kids aged 0-12. And it’s free of charge.

Must-see

Kids can experiment with ingredients, recipes and make their own biscuits in the exhibit “Kitchen” or become employees and customers and play at the food market “Exhibit: the ABC of nutrition” and discover the importance of a balanced nutrition.

Fun fact

There’s the exhibit “Bubble” where kids can create bubbles at different shapes and sizes by using everyday objects and the “Playspace” especially designed for children 0-3 years old and their families.
