The City of Athens will proceed with the upgrade & reopening of the historic Olympic Swimming Center of Athens

The City of Athens will proceed with the upgrade and reopening of the historic Olympic Swimming Center of Athens, located near the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Zappeion Megaron.

The City of Athens and the Hellenic Olympic Committee have signed a memorandum of cooperation that allows the City to undertake the complete renovation and operation of the facility for 25 years.

The Olympic Swimming Center opened in 1940 as the country’s first Olympic-sized pool and home to the national swimming championships. The pool closed in 2012 due to financial and technical issues. The memorandum will allow the facility to reopen in 2026.

The project is part of the City of Athens’ efforts to improve the quality of life in the Greek capital both for residents and visitors. The city’s urban development plan is based on the principles of sustainability and resilience, and includes the maintenance and upgrade of landmark sites.
