The Numismatic Museum of Athens is the former residence of Heinrich Schliemann, the world renowned archaeologist who discovered Troy. Built between 1878-1880 and designed by Ernst Ziller in the style of the Italian Renaissance, the building’s décor features Pompeian-style frescoes, floor mosaics depicting Schliemann’s finds at Troy and Mycenae, and excerpts from Greek literary texts. Today, it is home to the Numismatic Museum and its coin collection with 600,000 objects - including the original coin with the owl of Athens on its face - a literal treasury of historical data tracing the political, commercial, and cultural influence of Athens through the ages.
