The Odyssey Reinvented at IAPCO AM & GA 2026: How Athens Inspired the Global Meetings & Events Community
Athens recently took centre stage in the global meetings and events industry as the host destination for the IAPCO Annual Meeting & General Assembly 2026. This prestigious event brought together over 200 leading executives from 36 countries, offering a unique opportunity to showcase the city's capacity, expertise and forward-thinking approach to hosting high-level international gatherings.
A Landmark Event for Athens
The arrival of the IAPCO Annual Meeting & General Assembly in Athens marks a significant milestone for our local industry. Welcoming the world’s top Professional Congress Organisers (PCOs) allowed us to demonstrate the resilience, quality, and hospitality that define Athens as a premier MICE destination.
This success was driven by IAPCO Team Greece, a robust collaboration between This is Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau and four leading Greek PCOs: AFEA Congress, CONVIN, ERA Congresses and Events, and ERASMUS Conferences & Events. As accredited IAPCO members and active participants in HAPCO & DES, these partners joined forces with This is Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau to deliver a truly impactful event. This joint venture highlights the spirit of cooperation that underpins our national MICE strategy.
The Odyssey Reinvented: Programme and Narrative
The conference theme, "The Odyssey Reinvented", offered a modern adaptation of the classic epic, exploring the balance between technological transformation and human wisdom. The narrative celebrated the industry's journey, drawing parallels with Odysseus’s resourcefulness, patience, and leadership.
The programme was designed to address how technology is reshaping connections while emphasising that human emotion and adaptability remain crucial. Through this lens, delegates explored the future of meetings, focusing on how we can overcome adversity and lead with perseverance in a digital world.
Driving the Conversation: Leadership & Vision
A core component of the assembly was the Dialogue Sessions, a dynamic platform designed to foster high-impact conversations and actionable solutions. Participants engaged in small-group challenges, voting on task forces to drive industry initiatives forward.
This is Athens-CVB was proud to facilitate the "Ismarus | Leading Through Change: Building Resilient Leaders" session. Drawing inspiration from the Land of the Cicones - where Odysseus regrouped after adversity - this session focused on equipping leaders with strategies to navigate uncertainty. Key takeaways included practical tools for maintaining perspective, aligning teams during shifts in direction, and making confident decisions when the path ahead is unclear.
Experiencing Athens: Culture and Connection
Beyond the meeting rooms, the social programme and field trips provided an immersive experience of the city. Designed as an interactive cultural journey, the events offered a genuine taste of Greek tradition and philoxenia (hospitality).
From discovering local handicrafts and flavours to enjoying live music and dance, the evenings were more than just social gatherings. They were a celebration of community. Guests experienced the vibrant energy of Athens, connecting with the city through its sounds, tastes, and the warmth of its people. These experiences underscored the value of face-to-face interaction and the enduring power of shared cultural moments.
We are proud to have contributed to such an inspiring edition of this global gathering and look forward to seeing the long-term impact of these connections on Athens' future as a meeting destination.
