Marking Three Decades of Excellence: AFEA Congress Supports HTS in Its 30-Year Celebration

AFEA Congress had the honor of supporting the organization of the anniversary event celebrating the 30 years of the Hellenic Tunnelling Society (HTS). The event took place on Thursday, 23 October 2025, at the elegant Anassa City Events venue.

The program was moderated by Andreas Benardos, Mining and Metallurgical Engineer, Professor at the National Technical University of Athens and Chairman of the HTS Board. Through his presence and remarks, he highlighted the Society’s longstanding contribution, linking its rich past with its dynamic future.

The event was honored by a welcome address from the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Nikolaos Tachiaos, who emphasized the Society’s lasting role in the planning, technical advancement, and safety of underground works in Greece.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of the founding members of the first HTS Board. By honoring these pioneers, the Society paid tribute to the individuals who have served, and continue to serve, HTS with dedication, passion, and volunteer spirit over three decades.

The keynote speech, delivered by Ioannis Bakogiannis, Mining Engineer and former President of HTS, titled “The View is Underground,” highlighted the importance of underground works in the development of infrastructure and the shaping of the urban environment.

The event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Mr. I. Fikiris, Vice President of ITA-AITES and CEO of EDAFOS Engineering Consultants S.A. The panel featured distinguished speakers, including D. Anagnopoulos, Secretary General for Infrastructure; A. Aranitis, Managing Director of AKTOR Group; V. Karagkioules, Managing Director of Infrastructure Projects at METKA; A. Michailidis, Deputy CEO and Chief Technical Officer of TERNA S.A.; and N. Rigopoulos, Technical Director of AVAX Group.

Warm thanks are extended to the President of HTS, Professor Andreas Benardos, Vice President Marilia Balasi, and all members of the Board for their trust and excellent collaboration in delivering such a significant event—one that marks an important milestone in the history of the Hellenic Tunnelling Society.
