Athens will host the 32nd European Association of Archaeologists Annual Meeting

This is Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau has successfully secured the bid to host the 32nd Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA), scheduled to take place in the Greek capital from 26 to 29 August 2026. This major international congress will assemble professional archaeologists from across Europe to address contemporary challenges, research practices, and heritage management.

Fostering Knowledge Transfer & the Programme 

The arrival of the EAA Annual Meeting highlights the city's position as a primary centre for academic inquiry and archaeological research. The event provides direct opportunities for knowledge transfer, professional development, and networking. This convention brings tangible value to our local scientific ecosystem and hospitality sectors.

The four-day programme is structured around eight comprehensive themes that reflect the evolving nature of modern archaeology. Delegates will evaluate topics ranging from material culture studies and interdisciplinary research - including the integration of Artificial Intelligence and digital archiving - to the management of cultural heritage during periods of sustained instability, or 'permacrisis'. The sessions will also examine environmental transformations, human mobility, and new theoretical frameworks within the discipline.

A Curated Social Programme Across Urban Landmarks 

Delegates will also engage with the host city through a structured social programme designed to facilitate informal peer-to-peer networking across central Athens. The official Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception will take place on Wednesday 26 August at the historic Propylaea,of the Athens University, part of the Athenian Trilogy, on Panepistimiou Street. This inaugural evening sets the tone for the conference, featuring among others the official welcome remarks and the presentation of the EAA prizes. The Ilissia café-restaurant, situated within the peaceful gardens of the Byzantine and Christian Museum, will host the delegates against a verdant  backdrop for targeted networking and professional exchange.
