Athens Hosts Prestigious 64th ERSA Congress

Athens successfully hosted the 64th Annual Congress of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) from August 26–29. The event brought nearly 1,000 academics and scientists from around the world to the Greek capital, solidifying the city's reputation as a premier location destination for international conferences.

The congress, themed "Regional Science in Turbulent Times," served as a timely platform for global experts to address pressing issues such as economic uncertainty, migration, and the long-term impacts of the pandemic. With over 1,100 presentations and keynote speeches, the event enabled meaningful dialogue and knowledge sharing across disciplines.

Develop Athens through This is Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau provided key support in the successful delivery of the event, including the grand opening ceremony at the historic Zappeion Megaron, a stunning neoclassical landmark in the heart of Athens. The main conference sessions were held at the prestigious Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. Delegates were also able to enjoy the city’s cultural offering through an informal gathering at the university's garden and a formal dinner at the iconic Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).

At the opening ceremony, Ioannis Georgizas, Develop Athens CEO, delivered a welcoming address on behalf of Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. In his speech, Mr Georgizas highlighted the agency's pivotal role in the city's progress, stating, "Develop Athens is the main operational arm of the Municipality of Athens, contributing decisively to the development of the municipality's programme, which aims to transform Athens into a sustainable and carbon-neutral city."

The successful organisation of the ERSA Congress underscores the strong partnership between international associations like ERSA and the city of Athens. The Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau is proud to count ERSA among its valuable members and looks forward to welcoming more international events that contribute to the city's intellectual and economic vitality. From its historic venues to its forward-looking programme, the congress was widely regarded as a success, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.
