Niki de Saint Phalle: From Shooting Paintings to Freedom
The first exhibition in Greece dedicated to Niki de Saint Phalle opens at the Alex Mylona Museum in Thissio, offering a vivid journey through the work of one of the most radical and liberated artists of the 20th century. Titled From Shooting Paintings to Freedom, the exhibition traces Saint Phalle’s artistic path from her explosive performative works Tirs to the joyful, monumental Nanas, revealing a practice that transformed anger, trauma and resistance into colour, movement and celebration.
Drawing on key works from the MOMus collection, donated by the visionary collector Alexandros Iolas and the artist herself, the exhibition highlights the many sides of Saint Phalle’s universe. Painting, sculpture, collage, books and actions come together to form a world that appears playful and accessible, yet remains deeply political and subversive. Her work challenges patriarchal structures, questions power and celebrates freedom, imagination and renewal, themes that resonate strongly with contemporary social debates around equality and self-determination.
