To Have Been So Close So Many Times

The Greek National Opera Alternative Stage opens its new season with To Have Been So Close So Many Times, an ambitious music theatre and dance production conceived by composer and GNO Artistic Director Giorgos Koumendakis. Bringing together the poetry of Constantine P. Cavafy, nine GNO Ballet dancers, live vocalists, and two instrumental ensembles, the performance weaves a deeply ritualistic tapestry of desire, memory, and loss. Rather than following a linear narrative, the work plunges audiences into an emotional landscape where traditional Greek amanes vocal stylings meet contemporary composition across a striking, moving stage installation.
Three distinguished choreographers, Patricia Apergi, Ilias Hatzigeorgiou, and Eva Georgitsopoulou, lend their distinct movement languages to Koumendakis' score, exploring the human body as a vessel for lingering passion and vulnerability. Staged at the Greek National Opera inside the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, this haunting cross-disciplinary production offers dance and literature enthusiasts an extraordinary night of contemporary Greek performance art.
