Athens Goes Car-Free for 24 Hours

Athens is once again celebrating World Car-Free Day by clearing motor traffic from Athinas Street for the third consecutive year. From Saturday evening through Sunday night, the historic stretch between Evripidou Street and Monastiraki Square will be transformed for a full 24 hours, opening the heart of the city to pedestrians and creating a vibrant hub of art, culture and neighbourhood life.

Leave the usual urban gridlock behind and experience a quieter, more accessible side of Athens. Designed for long-time residents, newcomers and visitors alike, the event invites everyone to reclaim the street and explore the city centre entirely on foot.

Throughout the day, there’s plenty to see and do, from hands-on bike-decorating workshops and interactive children’s safety tracks to open skate clinics, community art installations, live performances and collective creative activities. As the day unfolds, the celebrations build towards a grand street-party finale.

More than a 24-hour event, the initiative highlights Athens’ broader commitment to sustainable mobility, cleaner air and more walkable, people-friendly public spaces.

And with the festivities taking place right by Monastiraki Metro Station, it’s an easy stop whether you’re dropping by for a walk, a skate, some creative inspiration or a lively evening out.
