TiACF26: Queer Movie Nights 2026
This May, TiACF2026 returns to prove that the best bits of the city aren't always on the mainstream maps. We’re moving beyond the landmarks and diving headfirst into the heartbeat of our neighbourhoods. From 1 May to 31 May, the city transforms into a living, breathing stage where you can anticipate lived experiences that often blur the lines between art and daily life. We’re taking over the spots you walk past every day: the quiet neighbourhood squares, the courtyards in "off-grid" districts, and the sun-drenched rooftops and backstreets only locals know how to find. With over 300 free events, this isn't just a festival happening in Athens; it’s a festival made by the city, for the city. It’s your festival. Check out our curated selection or go to the official TiACF26 website to see what's on throughout May.
You can feel the shift in the city's cinematic energy as Queer Movie Nights returns for its fifth consecutive year. Organised by ANTIVIRUS magazine, this festival is a vital fixture in the Athenian cultural calendar, specifically designed to amplify voices and identities that are too often pushed to the margins. Over the course of six days, the Trianon Cinema and the Goethe-Institut Athens transform into dedicated "safe spaces" for exploration, visibility, and dialogue.
The programme is an ambitious collection of 40 short and feature films from both Greece and abroad. You have the opportunity to see major international titles like Pillion (starring Alexander Skarsgård) and the opening film Jimpa (starring Olivia Colman) alongside essential local works such as the documentary On Lavender. A standout moment is the tribute to the legendary Rosa von Praunheim: a free screening of the provocative classic "It is not the homosexual who is abnormal, but the society in which he lives" at the Goethe-Institut.
This isn’t just about watching a screen: it’s about the community that gathers in the lobby. You can join discussions with filmmakers about whether the industry is truly a safe place for queer voices or dive into the competitive Greek segments to see the next generation of local creators. Most films are subtitled in both Greek and English, making this an incredibly inclusive environment where the stories are as diverse as the audience.
