Ben and Imo at the Greek National Opera
The Greek National Opera Alternative Stage opens 2026 with the Greek premiere of Ben and Imo, a music theatre work by acclaimed British playwright Mark Ravenhill. Set in 1952, the performance explores the intense creative and emotional relationship between composer Benjamin Britten and fellow musician Imogen Holst, during the turbulent period leading up to the composition of Britten’s opera Gloriana. Blending spoken word, live music and theatrical intimacy, the production unfolds as a chamber piece about artistic pressure, collaboration and vulnerability.
Directed and translated by Giorgos Skevas, the production focuses on the fragile balance between discipline and doubt, ambition and friendship. Aris Balis and Angeliki Papathemeli bring to life two contrasting personalities whose clashes gradually form a bond that shapes both their work and their lives. An original score by Simi Tsilali runs through the performance, while the presence of the GNO Children’s Chorus adds another layer to this reflective and emotionally charged work. English surtitles are provided.
