Stanley Whitney: Return to the Garden
Perched above its leafy Kolonaki courtyard, the whitewashed neoclassical Gagosian Athens is glowing with the rich colour palette of Return to the Garden, the latest exhibition by acclaimed American painter Stanley Whitney. Known for his vibrant abstract grids, Whitney transforms the gallery into a rhythm of shifting hues with blocks of colour that seem to dance, collide and breathe together. His first exhibition in Greece since Documenta 14, it feels like a homecoming: a moment to pause and experience colour as emotion and movement.
Each painting bursts from the wall like a syncopated jazz note. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and the craft of patchwork, Whitney’s canvases radiate creativity and rhythm, featuring new works from his Stay Song series (2017–) and Monk & Munch (2020–), a lyrical tribute to Thelonious Monk and Edvard Munch.This show is a joyful reminder that art can be a return to harmony and creative energy.
