PODIUM: Conference Interpreting and Artificial Intelligence - Challenges and Solutions

Conference interpreting is a cornerstone of multilingual communication at the international level. In international institutions such as the European Union and the United Nations, the ability to instantly and accurately translate spoken language into multiple languages is essential for decision-making and diplomatic cooperation.

In recent years, the rapid development of artificial intelligence has had a dynamic impact on the field of language technology. Advanced language models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini , as well as automatic speech recognition and machine translation systems, promise faster and more cost-effective language support at international events. The use of software that converts spoken language into text and
then translates it in near real-time creates new possibilities for online conferences and hybrid events.

However, the application of artificial intelligence to conference interpreting comes with significant challenges when there is no human interpreter involved. First, accuracy remains a critical issue. Human language is full of idioms, cultural references, and emotional nuances that often escape automated systems, resulting in a significantly lower rendition of the original message. In political or legal contexts, a small mistake can distort the meaning or cause misinterpretations with serious consequences.

Secondly, ethical and data protection issues arise. Conferences often involve sensitive information and the use of digital platforms requires strict security measures, which are difficult to ensure. Despite technological advances, human judgment, empathy and the interpreter' s ability to adapt quickly to unforeseen situations cannot be easily replaced.

However, instead of treating artificial intelligence as a threat, it can be seen as a means of enhancing human work.

At Podium, we leverage artificial intelligence as a modern and dynamic tool for exploring, understanding and highlighting human capabilities. Technology does not replace humans; it functions as an enhancing mechanism that allows us to analyze data accurately, identify patterns and formulate targeted, personalized solutions.

We know that hybrid models of human-machine collaboration appear to be a viable solution. And indeed, the relationship between conference interpreting and artificial intelligence is not competitive but transformative.

Artificial intelligence can be used to prepare interpreters by analyzing previous speeches, creating glossaries, and quickly searching for terminology. During a conference, it can provide supporting texts or transcripts, allowing the interpreter to
focus on delivering a quality speech.

In recent years, we have invested in improving our services and in greater efficiency, transparency and added value to our partners and customers.

Our approach combines innovation with human judgment, creating an environment where scientific knowledge, experience and data work complementary. Our goal is to continuously upgrade the quality of our services, enhance performance and substantially support the development of the people and organizations that trust us.

At Podium, artificial intelligence is a strategic ally in shaping a more efficient, adaptive and – paradoxically as it may seem – human-centered future.
