Athens Honoured as "Best Greek Hospitality Municipality" for 2025

Athens has been honored as the "Best Greek Hospitality Municipality" at the 2025 Greek Hospitality Awards. Presented at the 11th annual ceremony, this accolade recognizes the city’s collective commitment to providing an exceptional visitor experience.

This achievement belongs to every resident and, in particular, to the dedicated professionals in our tourism, culture, and dining sectors, whose welcoming spirit ensures every visitor feels at home.

The award comes as Athens cements its place among Europe’s top 10 destinations, on track to welcome an estimated 10 million visitors by the end of 2025. This growth highlights the importance of a forward-thinking approach to tourism, ensuring the city remains vibrant and inviting for both residents and visitors.

Through Develop Athens, our parent company & DMMO, we are actively implementing a comprehensive sustainable tourism strategy.
Key initiatives include:

  • A Tourism Carrying Capacity Study: A pioneering study in Europe to assess and manage visitor flows effectively.
  • The Sustainable Tourism Observatory: A dedicated body for monitoring and guiding the long-term sustainability of tourism in the city.
  • Strategic Urban Management: Introduction of regulations for short-term rentals and a dedicated Task Force for the historic Plaka district to preserve its unique character.
  • Urban Greening and Infrastructure: A commitment to planting 5,000 new trees annually, alongside significant flood prevention projects.
  • A Rich Cultural Calendar: The promotion of festivals and cultural events that are accessible to all, enhancing the city's dynamic atmosphere.

This award reinforces our strategic direction. Athens is committed to paving the way for a tourism model that is human-centric, responsible, and sustainable—a city that warmly welcomes its guests while remaining dedicated to the well-being of its residents.
