Dimitris Papaioannou: Exhibition at Onassis Stegi
Long before he was staging sweeping, cinematic physical theatre across the world’s major opera houses, Dimitris Papaioannou began as a painter and underground comic artist in 1980s Athens. In Exhibition, he steps off the stage and into the gallery space, presenting a comprehensive survey that connects his fine art origins with his iconic theatrical universe.
Rather than a static retrospective of sketches and props, this installation functions as an immersive walk through the artist’s visual subconscious. The exhibition showcases raw preparatory drawings, sculptures, storyboards, and spatial installations that trace his lifelong fixation with the male body, classical Greek archaeology, and the sheer mechanics of theatrical illusion. It is a rare, behind-the-curtain encounter with Greece’s most celebrated contemporary visual auteur, offering audiences a direct look at how a single drawn line on paper eventually translates into monumental living sculpture.
