George Lappas: SPOTLIGHT
Marking a decade since his passing, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) presents a dedicated Spotlight exhibition on George Lappas (1950–2016), one of the most transformative figures in modern Greek art. Born in Egypt and educated across psychology, architecture, and sculpture in Oregon, London, and Athens, Lappas fundamentally redefined Greek sculpture by steering it away from traditional representation toward bold, conceptual forms. His experimental practice treated three-dimensional sculpture as drawing in space, creating striking installations that play with scale, light, and illusory environments.
Curated by Daphne Vitali, the exhibition brings together pivotal works from the museum’s permanent collection alongside selected private loans. Drawing on cross-cultural references ranging from ancient Mayan and Egyptian art to 20th-century history and clinical psychology, the show explores Lappas’ fascination with the human condition and spatial boundaries. Situated on the museum's second floor in Koukaki, it offers a standout experience for anyone exploring contemporary art museums in Athens.
