AEF2026: TAO Dance Theater: 16 & 17
This summer, Athens Epidaurus Festival's main city venue, the former industrial complex in Pireos 260, celebrates 20 years as one of the city’s most vital cultural meeting points. Under the artistic direction of Michail Marmarinos, this year’s landmark programme unfolds across two months of theatre, dance, music, performance, and multidisciplinary works, bringing together more than 50 events by acclaimed international artists alongside some of the most exciting voices from Greece’s contemporary scene. Pireos 260 will live through the Athenian summer as a dynamic space where emerging creators, established names, and curious audiences come together to explore what contemporary performance can be today. New collaborations, technology-driven works, and immersive experiences sit alongside bold theatrical productions, live music, and cutting-edge choreography.
Amongst these cutting-edge international showcases is the appearance of TAO Dance Theater, one of the most iconic and trailblazing forces in contemporary dance. Awarded the Silver Lion for Dance at the Venice Biennale, founder Tao Ye distils his choreographic identity with staggering clarity through the twofold work 16 & 17, a pair of pieces from his acclaimed Numerical Series. Rooted in his original "Circular Movement System", which treats the human mind and body as an inseparable continuum of flow, the performance explores the depths of the body's inner architecture without courting simple spectacle.
The evening functions as a brilliant study in dialogue and counterpoint. In 16, sixteen dancers merge into a single, pulsing stream of energy. Drawing inspiration from the spiralling, sinuous movements of the dragon and snake found in traditional Chinese festive rituals, a subtle impulse from the head ripples organically through the entire ensemble. In 17, seventeen dancers scatter across the stage in a seemingly random arrangement that is governed by a strict internal coherence. Here, the raw sounds generated by the performers' own bodies remain in perfect synchronicity with their movements, building a captivating tension between sonic and somatic language that leaves a profound, quiet impression.
