Josephine the Singer or The Mouse Folk
Kafka’s world can feel unsettling in the best way, familiar, absurd, and strangely funny when you least expect it. This new music theatre production at the Greek National Opera Alternative Stage takes Josephine the Singer or The Mouse Folk and turns it into a live, physical performance where music becomes a form of resistance. With composer Kharálampos Goyós and director Savvas Stroumpos, the piece leans into Kafka’s tragic humour and sharp edges, using a musical dramaturgy inspired by vaudeville and lighter theatre traditions to bring the story’s tension and irony to the surface.
In a world where survival leaves no room for childhood and singing has all but disappeared, Josephine’s peculiar whistle becomes a rare spark, part enchantment, part revolt. Expect an intense, intimate evening with English surtitles, built for anyone who likes theatre that is inventive, darkly playful, and, maybe, a little bit unsettling.
