Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley: The Rape of Europa
The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens is celebrating women's art this season with a series of group and solo exhibitions honouring pioneering female artists.
EMST welcomes Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley for their first presentation in Greece. A dynamic duo known for their quirky, provocative films that blend painting, poetry and satire into a delicious cocktail of wit and humour. Their latest film, The Rape of Europa (2021), is a modern take on the classic Renaissance painting by Titian. The Kelleys take viewers on a wild ride through Roman mythology, where Europa, usually portrayed as a silent victim, steps into the spotlight and becomes an advocate for women’s rights, speaking out against centuries of misogyny and sexual violence. They weave a tale that's as thought-provoking as it is hilarious. Mary Reid Kelley embodies a wide range of historical and mythical characters, shedding light on the timeless struggles of women throughout history with the use of witty wordplay and clever storytelling.
