Before “13 Reasons Why” there was “Virgin Suicides”—Jeffrey Eugenides’ cauterizing tale of the five doomed Lisbon sisters and their contagious desire to depart the earth to escape their suburban suffocation. Emerging German theatre star Susanne Kennedy has adapted Eugenides’ popular novel for the stage as a highlight of this year’s Athens Festival. Kennedy picks up the story from the perspective of the now adult men who watched the unfolding drama as mesmerised boys from the house across the street. The production also incorporates texts by American LSD guru Timothy Leary, so it’s bound to be one hell of a trip. In German with English sub-titles.
