Tarek Al-Ghoussein

On Tuesday, 29 March 2011, Kalfayan Galleries, 11 Haritos Street, Athens, Greece between 20:00 and 22:00, will present the second solo exhibition of Kuwaiti photographer Tarek Al-Ghoussein with photographs from his "E-series".

In these works, Tarek Al-Ghoussein attempts to suggest the relationship between the objective barriers of a roundabout and the freedoms which arise from it because of its function.

The photographer captures roundabouts in different regions. Familiar to all of us, roundabouts serve to impose order on the landscape and at the same time, they serve as an element that controls movement. The roundabout in each image has recognizable references to the surrounding landscape and is a specific part of it. The fixed shape in the constantly changing landscape and its relationship to the order and control that it imposes are analyzed in the images of the "E-series". By placing the human figure with his back turned toward us in his images, Al-Ghoussein reflects on the ways in which the figure can position itself in a broader, man-made, system of order that determines one's ability to move freely.

Of Palestinian origin, Al-Ghoussein was born in Kuwait. His work has been included in many exhibitions in Europe, the USA, and the Middle East and in 2009 he was one of the artists that represented the UAE at the Venice Biennale. His works are included in the following permanent collections: Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Darat Al-Funun (Amman), Royal Museum of Photography (Copenhagen), Sharjarh Art Foundation, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York). He lives and works in Sharjah as a professor of photography at the American University of Sharjah.
