Your 5th Day in Athens

If you have five days to spend in Athens, we recommend dedicating your fifth day to the northern suburbs and the interesting places there are to visit. Surely, this will provide even further insight to the way of life in the greater Athens area.

EXPLORE THE NORTHERN SUBURBS OF ATHENS: NATURE, MALLS AND MORE. The northern suburbs of Athens may be greener and quieter than other parts, but there is lots to see and do here. The neighborhoods of Paleo Psychiko, Neo Psychiko, Marousi, Kifisia and Kefalari each have busy shopping districts and central squares that complement the predominantly one family home and, in some cases, villa-landscape motif. Kifissia Avenue is the main street that will get you to most of the following:

Neo Psychiko: located east of Kifissias Avenue, this area has evolved from a quiet suburb to an active shopping centre and business district. Shops carrying international brand names and commercial offices cater to consumers who were once lacking such facilities. Adrianou Street offers some delightful places to eat and drink.

Marousi: This suburb changed dramatically prior and after the Olympic Games. The Athens Olympic Sports Complex renovated and redesigned by architect Calatrava raised the area's economic value and is a new landmark in the Athens cityscape. Marousi also has many malls including The Mall, Golden Hall and Avenue.

Kifissia-Kefalari: The epitome of suburban residential aristocracy Kifissia home to some of Athens' best restaurants, pastry shops and outdoor cinemas. The flower show "Kifissia in Bloom" held annually in May is considered one of Europe's top. Shopping streets of interest include: Kassavetes, Kolokotroni, Kyprou and Georganta Streets, while musts include: a pastry at Varsos; and a visit to Natural History Museum Gaia Centre for its collection of mammals, reptiles, shells, rocks, minerals and fossils. Perfect for families.
