The Greek National Opera will present Aida, one of Giuseppe Verdi's most popular works, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, Greece in a production based on the historic staging of Dinos Gianopoulos (1991). The cast includes internationally known Greek and foreign performers. The premier will be on 23 July featuring the stunning Italian soprano Tiziana Caruso in the lead role. Performances will take place on 23, 24 and 28 July.

This opera is a landmark in Italian and international musical history. Known for its famous triumphant scene (Act II), it focuses on the feelings of the protagonists: the brave Radames and the two passionate women pursuing him, Aida and Amneris.

The libretto of the four-act opera was written by Antonio Ghislanzoni and based on a scenario by Auguste Mariettte. The action takes place in Egypt, specifically in Memphis and Thebes, during the time of pharaohs. Aida, daughter of the King of Ethiopia, is a slave to Amneris, the daughter of the King of Egypt. Both women are in love with Radames, the Egyptian captain of the guard, who returns victorious from a war with the Ethiopians.

Giuseppe Verdi, the most famous composer of the Italian Romantics, was born in Le Roncole in Northern Italy in 1813 and died in Milan in 1901. He studied music in rural Bousseto and in Milan.

Aida was first preformed at the Cairo Opera on 24 December 1871 with musical direction by composer and double bass Giovanni Bottesini. On 8 February 1872, it made its European premiere at La Scala of Milan. The Greek National Opera first performed Aida in 1958, when the Olympia Theatre in Athens was inaugurated.

Don't miss Giuseppe Verdi's Aida at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, Greece on 23, 24 and 28 July.
